The Effect of Non-Cariogenic Sweeteners on the Prevention of Dental Caries: A Review of the Evidence
A new review by Assistant Professor Dr. Catherine Hayes of Harvard School of Dental Medicine has been published in the Journal of Dental Education. Vol 65, No.10. The review, entitled "The effect of Non-Cariogenic Sweeteners on the Prevention of Dental Caries: A Review of the Evidence", concluded that
"Since the evidence suggests a strong caries protective effect for Xylitol, it would be unethical to deprive subjects of its potential benefits."
Xylitol is a naturally occurring sugar free sweetener manufactured from natural sources such as birch wood. It has the same sweetness as sugar as well as unique dental benefits. In particular, Xylitol is the only sweetener that actually inhibits the growth of acid producing bacteria in the mouth. It is widely used in sugar free chewing gum, confectionery & oral hygiene products.
